Christmas has always been the time of year that our family has certain traditions. The most important ones are gathering the family, including everyone’s significant others much to their chagrin, to watch White Christmas, and that great classic, A Very Brady Christmas. We do this on two separate nights, we can’t handle too much of a good thing all on one night, and this includes great food and goodies.
White Christmas has been part of my life since I was a kid. Even though I am Jewish, I probably know more about Christmas movies and songs than many Christians do. My husband can attest to that because he is Christian and I know more than he does. My girlfriends and I would get together when we knew that White Christmas was going to be on television and we would plan our evening around it. This spilled over into adulthood, and then my family got involved, we all own the DVD, and it became tradition. We know this movie so well that we can point out every splicing mistake, and there are many, every word that is pronounced weirdly, at least to us, and we know every single song by heart. White Christmas night is sacred.
As for A Very Brady Christmas, well that is another story. Not sure if anyone will be able to understand this, but we watch this movie every year – we all own copies of it – because it actually gives us the shivers. It is so ridiculous and corny, and that is what makes it a must see. We actually laugh and make fun of this movie from beginning to end. What a great way to spend an evening! Our favorite line in this movie, ” Don’t be sorry, just be Wally”. OMG, what does that even mean???? But, we love this, insult to our intelligence, movie.
Many families have their own traditions during the holidays, lovely family dinners, going on amazing family vacations, ice skating on Christmas eve, things that give them joy. Ours is sitting together in front of the television, eating party sandwiches with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera Ellen, and The Brady Bunch. What could be better?
Merry Christmas everyone!
